How We Design a Workshops for all Your Senses.

Ever wonder what really goes into designing one of our workshops? Spoiler alert: it’s not just a few Pinterest boards or saved TikToks and a dream. Though, yes, there are a lot of tabs open and you’d get lost in our notes, texts, and DMs.

Designing a workshop with us is part creative experiment, part group therapy, part color-fueled chaos. It’s where ideas, trends, materials, and last-minute inspiration collide. Here’s what it looks like when we turn a tiny spark into a whole experience the real behind-the-scenes.

Step 1: What Do We Want To Do?

Every workshop starts with a “what if?” moment.

What if we taught people to make something completely weird and wonderful? What if we used this random material we found in a thrift store bin? What if we leaned into messy instead of perfect?

We chase the ideas that make us laugh out loud or tilt our heads and go, “Wait, can we actually do that?”

We don’t start with logistics. We start with vibes. We build mood boards, play with color palettes, stay on theme, and ask our favorite questions:

“What do we want people to notice when they enter?”

“What do we want the vibes to be when they are making?”

“What do we want attendees to feel when they are leaving?

If the answer isn’t joyfully unhinged or creatively alive, we keep brainstorming.

🧠
Step 2: Designing the Experience

Once the spark is there, we turn it into something people can actually do. We get into every detail of logistics. We think about all the ways each sense can be activated.

We map out the experience like a story:

  • The intro where everyone gets comfortable (and slightly nervous).

  • The “aha!” demo moment.

  • The messy middle where everyone doubts their life choices.

  • And finally, the triumphant “look what I made!” ending.

We test flow, timing, and jokes. You can’t just wing humor while wielding a hot glue gun. However, sometimes the 20+ year friendship and inside jokes get the best of us and attendees laugh AT us a little bit more than WITH us.

We consider that different brains mean different learning styles. Different personalities mean we could have chatty crafters and quiet crafters sitting next to each other. We think of written directions and tips. We take the time to show examples in lots of ways and encourage the one that “gets it” to show their neighbor. We stress no one is an expert and we learn new ways every time we host.

🧵
Step 3: Gathering Materials

This is where things get dangerously fun.

Our space turns into a material wonderland or a disaster zone, depending on your perspective. We hunt for supplies that feel good to touch, look good on a table, and photograph like a dream. We source as much as we can from our already established supplies and think of ways to recycle and upcycle.

There’s also a lot of last-minute crafting marathons where we’re cutting, sorting, and labeling while binge watching and wondering why we didn’t start this earlier.

🧪
Step 4: Testing + Tuning

We believe in test runs because what looks great in our heads sometimes turns into a glue-covered existential crisis in real life.

So we try it out. We invite our team (or our most willing friends + partners) to be guinea pigs. We tweak steps, simplify tools, and occasionally realize we’ve invented something way too complicated.

There’s always a “we can totally fix that” moment. And we do. We imagine all the scenarios and what could cause a hiccup.

🪩
Step 5: Setting the Scene

The day-of setup is where our inner perfectionists and experience planners unite.

We think about everything : how the set up looks, how it smells when people walk in, what music sets the mood (playlists are an artform too!). We notice and practice the flow and ease access to materials. We consider how we are reaching the up front eager folx and the shy, hesitant folx hiding in the back.

We’re basically creating a tiny universe where people get to pause their real lives and just make stuff.

💥
Step 6: The Workshop in Action

This is the best part. This is the point.

The room hums with creative energy. There’s laughter, a few confused looks, someone asking if they’re “doing it wrong” (the answer is always there’s no wrong way), and that satisfying moment when everyone finally gets into the zone.

It’s messy, it’s loud, it’s perfect. It’s filled with encouragement and audible excitement as we are surprised at a new technique.

We float around helping, hyping, and occasionally handing out paper towels and tips. And every single time, there’s this moment where we look around and think, yeah, this is why we do it.

🎭
BONUS STEP: Custom + Themed Workshops

Now, this is where things get extra fun when someone says,

“Hey, can you make a workshop for our team / company / themed event?”

Um, yes. Yes, we can. And we get a special joy out of creating something original.

Designing a custom or themed workshop is like writing a love letter to your group’s personality. We take what makes your team unique: the inside jokes, the company culture,  and turn it into a hands-on creative experience that people actually want to attend (no icebreakers, we promise).

Here’s how we do it:

  • We start with your goals. Are you trying to spark creativity, boost collaboration, or just remind your people why they like working there?

  • We find your theme. It might be seasonal, company-driven, or purely ridiculous.

  • We tailor the materials and flow. We’ll tweak the project so it fits the goal. Whether that’s “getting to know you”, comfortable bonding, or high-energy chaos.

  • We bring the connection magic. Every part is designed to get people laughing, talking, and realizing that creativity isn’t about being “good at art”,  it’s about being curious together.

The result? A workshop that’s original, not a cookie-cutter team builder. It’s hands-on, memorable, and probably a little messy in the best way.

🪞
Step 7: Reflection + Evolution

Afterward, we debrief sometimes with careful and considered notes over coffee, sometimes with margaritas.

We talk about what worked, what didn’t, and what we want to try next time. Someone always says, “We should’ve filmed that part,” and we agree, but we also value being IN the moment with the attendees.

Every workshop teaches us something new. It’s not just about crafting, but about connection, play, curiosity, and how people light up when they’re allowed to make something just for fun.
